Nori is a traditional food that has been enjoyed by Japanese people since ancient times. With gratitude for nori, a gift from the sea, the National Nori and Shellfish Fisheries Cooperative Association Federation established February 6th as "Nori Day" in 1966 (Showa 41).
The origin of "Nori Day" comes from the fact that nori was recorded as a tax in the "Taiho Ritsuryo," the oldest written law code in Japan, enacted in 701 (Taiho 1). Since January 1st of Taiho 2 (702) converted to the Western calendar is February 6th, this day was designated as "Nori Day," and commemorative events are held every year.
Nori is rich in protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, calcium, EPA, taurine, beta-carotene, amino acids, and other nutrients, making it a highly nutritious food. It is used in various dishes such as onigiri (rice balls), makizushi (rolled sushi), and miso soup.
The National Nori and Shellfish Fisheries Cooperative Association Federation has also established the day of Setsubun (around February 3rd) as "Norimaki Day" due to the custom of eating norimaki on Setsubun. This is part of their efforts to expand nori consumption.

海苔は、古代から日本人に好まれている伝統的な食品です。海からの贈り物である海苔に対する感謝の気持ちを込めて、全国海苔貝類漁業協同組合連合会が1966年（昭和41年）に「海苔の日」を2月6日と定めました。
「海苔の日」の由来は、701年（大宝元年）に制定された日本最古の成文法典である「大宝律令」に海苔が租税として納められていたことが記されていることにちなんでいます。大宝律令が施行された702年（大宝2年）1月1日を西暦に換算すると2月6日となるため、この日を「海苔の日」と定め、毎年記念行事が実施されています。
海苔は、タンパク質、食物繊維、ビタミン、カルシウム、EPA、タウリン、ベーターカロテン、アミノ酸などが豊富に含まれており、栄養価が高い食品です。おにぎり、巻き寿司、味噌汁など、さまざまな料理に使われています。
全国海苔貝類漁業協同組合連合会では、海苔の消費拡大を目指し、節分の日（2月3日頃）にのり巻きを食べる風習に由来して、節分の日を「のり巻きの日」に制定しています。
